Quick fixes

The most common problems – and what to check

Safety first: Always switch off, remove the key or unplug, and wait for every part to stop before you open, clear or adjust the machine.
Machine won't startFuel, oil, switches and power – the quick checks.
  • Petrol/diesel: check there is fuel and that the fuel tap is open.
  • Check the engine oil level – many engines will not start when the oil is low.
  • Petrol: use the choke on a cold engine and check the engine switch is ON.
  • Electric: check the plug, the isolator switch and the circuit breaker at the board.

Meal too coarse or too fineUsually the sieve or worn hammer bits.
  • Check you are using the right sieve for the crop (see Specifications).
  • Take the sieve out and look for holes, tears or bending – a damaged sieve lets big pieces through.
  • Worn, rounded hammer bits grind poorly – check their edges.

Pellets crumble or won't formMix moisture and a warm die fix most cases.
  • Your mix is probably too dry – add a little water or molasses and mix well.
  • A cold die gives poor pellets: run a little oily mix through first to warm it up.
  • Use finely milled material – coarse meal does not bind well.

Machine keeps blockingHow to clear it safely – and stop it happening.
  • Material that is wet or damp blocks the sieve – dry it first.
  • Feed slowly and let the machine clear before adding more.
  • To clear a blockage: switch off, wait for the rotor to stop, then clean the chamber and sieve.

Vibration or a new noiseLoose bolts, belts, bearings and hammer bits.
  • Stop and check for loose bolts on the frame, motor and covers.
  • A missing or broken hammer bit unbalances the rotor – replace the full set.
  • Grinding or rumbling from the shaft usually means a worn bearing.

Output has droppedSieves, belts, worn parts and feeding speed.
  • Clean the sieve – a blocked sieve slows everything down.
  • Check the belt – if it slips or squeals it needs tightening or replacing.
  • Feed slowly and evenly; overloading slows the rotor.
  • Turn or replace worn hammer bits (always as a full set).
